We all know or have met someone who is the eternal optimist. Someone who is able to see the positive in most situations and when they can’t they don’t allow the situation to get the better of them. These people send off a ‘good vibe’, […]
Understanding why we procrastinate is important if we want to overcome its seductive temptations. Like binging on Netflix instead of cleaning the house or beginning that important project that seems to be perennially getting put off! We all procrastinate with 20% of us regularly avoiding […]
Do you ever have those days where you wake up feeling flat and a bit down? Days where you struggle to wake up and find the motivation to begin your day? Days where you wish you could go back to bed rather than face the day ahead? Here are 5 ways to help you lift your mood when you feel down in the morning.
For me, today has been one of those days. I have woken up feeling down and unmotivated.
I know that I’m not the only one who experiences the morning blues. This is why I wanted to share a few ways that have helped me get the best possible start to the day. They will help you begin your day in a positive light, even when you wake up with the morning blues.
1. Begin your day with exercise to lift your mood when you feel down
OK, so I know this first step is a bit cliché because I’m sure this is not the first time that you’ve heard someone discuss the benefits of exercise in the morning.
The reason exercise this is the first step on my list is because exercise is one of the most effective ways to lift your mood when you are feeling down. Exercise does this by releasing feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins. It also energises you and helps your body utilise energy more efficiently throughout the day.
When it comes to morning exercise I have learnt to follow the KIS principle – keep it simple and do whatever it is that you can! We live in a world where we are often pressed for time so take whatever time you have, even if it’s only 5-10mins.
Personally, I begin my day with yoga in my living room. I have discovered a wonderful yoga teacher on YouTube who has an extensive selection of classes ranging in time from 10mins to an hour.
The most important thing is to get moving, go for a walk, jog or swim. If you don’t have time for any of those do some push-ups, sit-ups and squats in your living room because believe me, this will help energise your body – it’s scientifically proven!
2. Morning meditation helps you begin your day in a more positive light
When we wake up feeling flat and a bit down our thoughts tend to be rather pessimistic and negative. That old friend self-doubt creeps in and when this happens it’s easy to go into a downward spiral of negative thoughts which lead to negative emotions and a further lack of motivation.
Meditation is a great way to lift your mood when you are down. It does this by cleansing the mind. When practiced consistently over time, meditation allows you to gain a degree of control over your thoughts and emotions.
If you’re not really sure what meditation is, here is a really helpful introduction.
I have a mindfulness meditation practice that I follow which entails sitting peacefully and concentrating on my breath. By focusing on my breath I am able to settle my mind. I do this by drawing my attention away from the thoughts that are circling around in my head to focus on my breath.
When I notice myself lost in thought (which ALWAYS happens in meditation, the objective is to become aware of when we do this) I gently refocus my attention on my breath. By doing this I am practicing presence or mindfulness. My awareness is on the present moment rather than focusing on thoughts of the past and future.
Through meditation, I clear my mind and this allows me to focus on what it is that I want to achieve for the day. It helps me reset my mindset for the day ahead. It allows me to focus on what needs to be done rather than get lost in a mind of negative thoughts.
Again, sometimes I am pressed for time and can only meditate for 5mins. Of course the longer the better but even 5 mins is beneficial.
3. Having a nutritional breakfast gives you the best start possible to your day
Again, another cliché! You’ve no doubt heard about the benefits of a nutritional breakfast so I’m probably not telling you anything that you don’t already. What I do want to say is that in order to feel good you have to nourish your body with the right foods.
From a physiological standpoint, our bodies need a balance of nutritional elements in order to function properly, particularly our brain. This has been proven by medical studies that point to a connection between nutritional deficiencies and depression.
Having a nutritional breakfast provides you with the energy you need to start your day. It feeds your brain the food it needs to focus.
When you wake up feeling flat, unmotivated or a little down giving yourself the best start possible to the day can only assist you in feeling better and lifting your mood. So when you wake up feeling less than optimal, nourish your mind and body with a good wholesome breakfast!
4. Lift your mood when you feel down by listening to music that makes you feel good
We’ve all heard the old adage ‘music is food for the soul’. Songs are an incredibly effective way to lift your mood when you feel down. The right song can provide you with an instant mood boost. It doesn’t always have to be something upbeat – chill out music does it for me.
Studies demonstrate a correlation between listening to music, positive feelings and the feeling of happiness.
So when you wake up dragging yourself out of bed, feeling flat, unmotivated and a bit down put on some music that makes you feel good while you make yourself that nutritional breakfast 😉 Music provides you with a way to begin your day in a positive way.
5. Begin your day positive by listening to a podcast or watching something that inspires you or makes you laugh
Listening to or watching something that inspires you or makes you laugh is another way to boost your mood. This morning while making and eating breakfast I watched part of a webinar that I found inspiring and from this inspiration, I felt optimism, motivation and self-belief.
Within a short period of time, I went from feeling down and unmotivated to feeling rather motivated and upbeat.
Through watching something that inspired me my mind shifted to inspirational thoughts and positive feelings. I now feel good about the day ahead and feel prepared to face the world and all it has to offer me :).
Take control and set yourself up for the best start possible start to your day
Lift your mood when you feel down by implementing a few positive lifestyle choices into your morning routine. Exercise, meditation and a healthy breakfast, along with some mood boosters such as music and visual media will set in motion a series of events that leave you feeling more upbeat and optimistic.
So next time you wake up feeling flat, unmotivated and a little down take control of the situation and work towards having the best start possible start to your day!
Thanks for taking the time to read this post, if you enjoyed reading it please share it! 🙂
