Imagine if You Could Stop Selling Your Time for Money
When we are children we are asked ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’
Contained within this question is the implicit assumption that the answer will entail some kind of job. Or even better a stable and well-paying career!
Imagine if we were encouraged to pursue our interests and passions instead of selling our time for money.
If you had been encouraged to think-outside-the-box imagine what your life would be like now.
The Collective Misconception of Selling Your Time for Money
Our education systems set us up to become employees who sell their time for money. As a child, we are conditioned to believe that selling our time for money is the sole means of making a living.
We are led to believe that in order to get ahead in life we have to commit to working long hours in the workplace. As such, the path to a comfortable existence is through a promotion or a higher paying job.
We are told to work hard. And put aside as much as we can so that we will have enough money to survive during our retirement years.
This is nothing but a collective misconception that is sustained and reproduced by individuals who fail to think-outside-the-box and question their lot in life.
It’s sustained by mediocrity and indifference.
Time is the Most Precious Commodity You Have
The problem with selling your time for money is that you have a limited amount of time to sell. There are only 24 hours in a day and the more time you sell, the less time you have to spend doing other things. Like the things that matter to you such as spending time with family and friends, pursuing your passions or maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Your time is the most precious commodity you have.
You, therefore, need to place a premium on it. And begin to imagine what your life would be like if you could stop selling your time for money.
Learn to Take Advantage of Opportunity
We live in an era of immense change, possibility, and opportunity.
In order to take advantage of these opportunities you first have to open your mind to them. So a mindset shift is the first step towards breaking free of the collective misconception that you need to sell your time for money.
How to Cultivate a Mindset Shift
The first step to cultivating a mindset shift is actively seeking out material that encourages you to think differently. If you haven’t already read it, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki is a great place to start. This book will open your mind to different ways of thinking when it comes to earning a living.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a great book on the power of thought and belief. You will never be able to take advantage of opportunities unless you are open to them and believe in them. This book will teach you how to adopt a mindset that is open to identifying and receiving opportunities (you can download the book for free here).
If you either don’t like or don’t have time for reading, you can always download audio books.
YouTube is another great resource. I would recommend Tony Robbins’s New Money Masters series as a great resource. It opens your mind to the exciting new opportunities that exist for making money online.
Imagine What Your Life Would Be Like
You cannot underestimate the importance of creating a vision of what you want in life. A vision creates aspirations and encourages you to aim higher. It provides you with the motivation required to make positive changes in your life.
Imagine the kind of life you would be living if you didn’t have to sell your time for money. Imagine that you have enough income to live a comfortable life. That you have enough time to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
Once you have a clear vision of the kind of life you want, you can then work towards creating that life.
4 Ways to Stop Selling Your Time for Money
The next step is, of course, exploring ways to stop selling your time for money!
Ideally, you want to explore ways to establish passive income. You also want to look at establishing multiple income streams.
Establishing sources of passive income takes time in the beginning but once they are set up they begin generating income on their own, hence the name passive income. Examples of creating passive income are:
- Write an eBook (or multiple books)
- Create an online course
- Create a product
- Affiliate marketing
Write an eBook
Now I can hear you saying ‘write a book, I’m not a writer, besides what would I possibly write about?’
Well, it’s incredibly easy these days to publish your own eBook and sell it on either Amazon or Kindle.
Think of what your interests are. Join online forums on this topic to get an idea what people are discussing regarding the topic. You could write a book answering people’s questions concerning this topic. If you can write something useful that educates that’s great. Or you may enjoy writing fiction if so write a novel.
(Check out the below clip of Eban Pagan, who built a multi-million dollar online business that began with writing and publishing his own eBook.)
Create an online course
The secret that makes this a passive source of income is automation! You will have to put in the time to establish this passive income stream but once its set up you can automate the entire process.
Think about what you have to offer. It may be a meditation or yoga course taught through videos. Or life or business coaching; teaching a language; cooking classes; horticulture. Whatever you are passionate about or have knowledge or expertise in.
Create a product
This form of passive income could be a downloadable online product such as a series of books or a physical product sold on eBay or Amazon.
The great thing about Amazon is that you don’t have to create or store the product. You can have it made in China and shipped to an Amazon warehouse and they take care of the shipping for you! You can even brand your products and create your own brand of products that are sold on Amazon.
Affiliate marketing is where you promote other people’s products online by directing traffic to the vendor’s website. When a purchase is made you get a commission for the sale. Again, automation plays an important part of an affiliate marketer’s business.
Once you have the foundations set up such as a website and email autoresponder you can focus on expanding the business to promote multiple products. You will have to commit time to this business to but the benefits are that you work wherever and whenever you like. Furthermore, your earning potential isn’t capped, because you’re not selling your time for money.
Stop Selling Your Time for Money – it’s all About Lifestyle
The sole reason to stop selling your time for money is lifestyle.
Passive income allows you to make money while pursuing your passions and interests. It frees you so that you can spend time doing things that provide meaning and purpose to your life. It allows you to increase your income without becoming a slave to the workplace. It puts you in the driver’s seat of your life and provides you with the freedom to live life on your terms.
